Options  for Grade 4-8 Students

Homework Help

Many students hit a rough patch here and there, and just need a little extra help to get through it. This student needs to develop study skills, focus strategies, and some help with current content.

Tutoring in this case, usually occurs one or two days per week. Students who request homework help typically remain active with a tutor for one semester or more. Occasionally through the course of the tutoring arrangement, more gaps are found. When that happens, the arrangement is sometimes extended to a year or more.

Short-term Remedy

The student has been struggling with several skills or concepts for some time. S/he might be having difficulties keeping up with classwork, failing tests regularly, and loosing interest in school related activities.

Tutoring usually occurs once or twice a week for at least an hour each session. Tutoring will include some homework help, but the focus of the lessons will be on helping the student develop the skills and abilities needed to progress with their peers. Tutoring at this level usually occurs for at least 1 year.

Long-term Recovery

Some students have extenuating circumstance that have caused them to fall severely behind. Reading at a level more than a grade below, lacking basic math skills necessary to solve problems in daily coursework. Students require intense efforts by parents, teachers, and tutors to help the student fill in gaps that are missing.

Tutoring at this level should occur at least twice a week for 1-2 hours (depending on the student's attention abilities).

Group Study

Many times, I've found, students learn better in a small group setting. We can have number talks and work out more complex problems than one-on-one settings allow. I love working with small groups because I get to see different aspects of my students shine.

A short-term or long-term student can add a group session with friends or family working at the same (or close to the same) level. This can be an added session, a one-time option during a school break, or an ongoing series.
